Sensei Ian Duncan

8th — Dan

Ian Duncan (8th Dan) had been doing karate since 1973. In 1996, he pursued karate full time and established the Ian Duncan Karate Centre, an affiliate of grandmaster Mikio Yahara of Japan and deputy grandmaster Malcolm Dorfman of the Karatenomichi World Federation. The five karate maxims resonated with him and guided him throughout his training. His legacy will continue for many years to come.

His karate was defined by a rare combination of technical precision and immense heart. Having trained under the world's most prestigious masters, he brought the spirit to IDKC, teaching that the ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of character.

  • 2019: Graded to 8th Dan by Grandmaster Mikio Yahara. Appointed Technical Director of Karate no Michi South Africa.
  • 2007: Graded to 7th Dan by Grandmaster Mikio Yahara.
  • 2000: Awarded 6th Dan (Karate no Michi Cardiff).
    • Karate no Michi World Championship (Cardiff) - Masters Kata 2nd Place.
  • 1998: Awarded JKA SA National Colours.
    • JKA World Championship (Switzerland) - Masters Kumite 2nd Place
    • JKA World Championship (Switzerland) - Masters Kata 3rd Place
    • Achieved International "C" classification for Instructor, Examiner, and Referee.
  • 1994: Graded to 5th Dan by Sensei Stan Schmidt.
    • SA JKA National Championships - Masters Kata 1st Place.
  • 1993: Trained with Sensei Nishiyama in California.
    • SA JKA National Championships - Over 35 Kata 1st Place
    • SA JKA National Championships - Over 35 Kumite 2nd Place
  • 1992: Double Gold Medalist.
    • SA JKA National Championships - Over 35 Kumite 1st Place

  • 1991: Attended UK Seminar under Sensei K Enoeda, Sensei Tabata, and Sensei Mori.

  • 1990: A Historic Year of Competition.

    • SA JKA Nationals (Durban): Over 35 Kumite 1st, Over 35 Kata 1st, Under 75kg Kata 2nd.
    • NAKAMA All Styles (Cape Town): Team Kata 2nd Place.
    • Awarded Transvaal Provincial Colours for both Kumite and Kata.
  • 1989: Graded to 4th Dan by Sensei Tanaka.
